Comments

Comments in C are notes or explanations added to the code that the compiler ignores during execution. They help programmers understand the code's purpose, logic, or functionality, making it easier to read and maintain.

Types of Comments in C

C supports two types of comments: single-line comments and multi-line comments.

1. Single-Line Comments

  • Start with //.
  • Used for short explanations or notes on a single line.
  • Everything after // on that line is ignored by the compiler.

Example:

// This is a single-line comment

2. Multi-Line Comments

  • Start with /* and end with */.
  • Used for longer explanations that span multiple lines.
  • Everything between /* and */ is ignored by the compiler.

Example:

/*  This is the example of multiple line comments.
    All the text or code inside this are not executed by the compiler.
    This types of comment are used to provide documentation about the code. */

Best Practices for Comments

  1. Keep It Simple: Write clear, concise comments that are easy to understand.
    • Bad: // x is now 1
    • Good: // Set x to 1 to initialize counter
  2. Avoid Redundancy: Don’t repeat what the code obviously does.
    • Bad: x = x + 1; // Add 1 to x
    • Good: x = x + 1; // Increment counter for loop
  3. Update Comments: If you change the code, update the comments to match.
  4. Use for Clarity: Comment complex logic, functions, or important steps.
  5. Avoid Over-Commenting: Don’t comment every line; focus on what needs explanation.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Unclosed Multi-Line Comments: Forgetting */ causes errors.
/* This is a comment without an end
int x = 5; // This line will be ignored, causing issues
  • Overusing Comments: Too many comments can clutter code and make it harder to read.
  • Outdated Comments: Comments that no longer match the code can confuse readers.
